Although they are toys, Legos inspire amazing creations. LEGO artists use small plastic bricks for everything from robots to architecture. Engineers from the company also create new elements that enable builders to create more intricate models. Erik Varszegi, a Master Builder with the Lego Group in Billund, Denmark created a new feature this year which is the curved slope. It allows Lego users to create more slanted designs while adhering the strict color palette of the company. The slopes can be used to create more dynamic shapes, for example, an incline staircase.

Some Lego sets are the result of professional designers’ work while others are the result of the wildly popular Lego Ideas program. The Ideas line lets anyone design a set and it is able to be made. It offers fame and 1percent of sales to anyone who convinces 10,000 peers that their creation is worthy of be made. It’s no surprise that the most elaborate and impressive sets usually garner the most support, especially when they are based on iconic characters or scenes from films or television shows in real life.

Two space icons are among the most impressive Lego models: the NASA shuttle Discovery and the Hubble Telescope model. Each telescope comes with a plaque for display and an exact Lego version of its creator. Other impressive models are frames of a rainbow, a steampunk dragon and a replica the Palace of Westminster.
